An examination will show the extent to which contagious diseaseshave prevailed in the localities reporting. It will also serve to showthe irregularity with which reports have been received, and thedifficulties encountered in the attempt to keep a uniformly completerecord. Several localities, though not represented by the full sixmonths, have been heard from regularh^ since the commencementof our corresj^ondence with them, which was not until after January. It has been customaiy, each month, to compare the mortality reportswith those of sickness; also each month Vvith that preceding, and togive, as far as possible, the ratio of deaths to population per onethousand.
