It cannot be obtained from a static 60 THE N. E. M. A. QUARTERLY. machine. I make this positive statement on no less an authority than Tousey, who says: Some manufacturers claim that their static machine will give ahigh frequency current direct. They use in conjunction with the static ma-chine a vacuum electrode. When the vacuum electrode is placed in contactwith the patient it will light up with a violet color the same as it would ifattached to a high-frequency apparatus, but the sensation produced in thepatient is entirely different, being of a vibratory character; it is, in fact,. FlG. 1.—Portable high frequency outfit. when used in this way in conjunction with the static machine, simply a method of applying the wave current by means of vacuum electrodes In order to demonstrate the fact that this current is not a high-frequencyone, it is only necessary to insert between the electrode and the apparatus alittle instrument known as the oscilloscope. . With the static you willnotice that the violet color is all on one side of the center, whereas whenconnected with the Tesla current it shows the violet color on both sides ofthe center. The high-frequency current consists of a vast number of vibrations pe;second, depending upon the amouunt of current and the kind of quote Tousey again: When a discharge of electrostatic energy takesplace from a Ley den jar the spark does not represent a single exchange ofthe exact amount required to equalize the electric conditions of its twoarmatures. On the contrary,
