Lady artists at the Egazini Art Project, Grahamstown, South Africa, pose for a photograph
The Xhosa word egazini means 'place of blood' and refers to the battle ground at Grahamstown, where 1000 Xhosa warriors died in the Battle of Grahamstown, 22 April 1819. The lady artists wear the traditional head wraps of Xhosa women and they are relaxing in a kitchen area, originally part of the apartheid police station housing the project. A township tour brings in money, as visitors are likely to buy their African artwork ink prints and calendars, all signed, named and numbered.
