An old portrait photograph of George Robey who was known to his fans as 'The Prime Minister of Mirth' performing on radio . Robey whose real name was Sir George Edward Wade, CBE (1869 – 1954), was an English comedian, singer and actor in musical theatre. He was also one of the greatest variety, music hall and pantomime performers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries starring in the Royal Command Performance in 1912. In addition he was a semi-professional sportsman, playing cricket and football , starred on stage in Shakespearean plays and had a modest success in film.
