The Takahe (Porphyrio hochstetteri) is a flightless bird indigenous to New Zealand and belonging to the rail family. It was thought to be extinct at the end of the 19th century but rediscovered in 1948. Nowadays the Department of Conservation is running an important conservation program for these birds. Das Südinsel-Takahe (Porphyrio hochstetteri) ist ein flugunfähiger Vogel aus der Familie der Rallen, der nur in Neuseeland vorkommt. Forscher hielten die Art am Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts für ausgestorben, 1948 wurde sie jedoch wieder entdeckt. Die Naturschutzbehörde Neuseelands verfolgt ein umfassendes Schutzprogramm für diese Gänse-großen Vögel.
