Head ftatlish. about the width of thebody, neck but little smaller than thebody. Length 13 inches, tail 3, plates1G4, scales 60 pair. History.—This snake is of a timid dis-position, being seldom seen abroad, butis often met with in different parts of thestate, concealed under stones, logs, andthe bark of old, decayed trees. Its foodconsists principally of THE CHE UN vernulis.—Di: —Color above beautifulgrass green ; beneath greenish, or yellow- ish white ; margin of the upper jaw yel-lowish ; pupil black, upper edge of theiris yellow, below grayish brown. Scalesnot keeled, smooth, rhomboidal, with theacute angles truncated, giving them theappearance of unequal sided flattened and covered with HI plates,one at the snout, two pair behind these,then 3 plates between the eyes, J largerones behind these upon the occiput, up-per jaw bordered by 1) scales, includingthe one at the snout; nostril circular, andnear the end of the snout.
