In the foreground, a large three-masted sailing vessel is left stranded by the tide, her sailsdangling from her upper yards, her tall masts and riggingforming graceful patterns against the sky. In the distance asmall boat passes and the sea extends to the shore line, show-ing blue in the distance under a sky which is covered withheavy rolling cumuli. Signal at the Inner right, Jove MM). A broad bank covered with parchedherbage, up which a woman in red dress and white cap toilswith a basket of linen, slopes gently on the right to the watersedge, where stand a few boatmen and loiterers. Fine housesborder the road extending in a curved sweep parallel to theriver, changing in the distance to tall warehouses and the further bank some lofty chimneys betray the presenceof factories clustering about the end of the bridge; the skyis peaceful and serene, covered with a level bank of light cloud, tinged pink in the rays of a declining sun.
