The engineer of not so many years back, who located railroadswith a view of securing a good ground line for his profile so that hisroad might be constructed as cheap as poossible, irrespective of thecost of operation, now finds it an entirely different problem; it is nothow cheap the Hue can be constructed, but is now a matter of gradesand tonnage, if he desires the road to be in position to meet activecompetition For this reason, immense sums of money are being ex-pended, by several railroad companies in this State in changingalignment and reducing grades to a basis where they can realize thethe full capacity of their motive power. Take for instance the con-dition a number of railroad companies found themselves in whenproviding new power, say of tifteen hundred tons capacity, save per-haps on account of one grade which reduced the tonnage say to ten. hundred tons. The remedy therefore is to cut down the grades inorder to realize full capacity of the motive power, if they would keeppace with keen competition. In track construction, among the improvements noted is placingthe nuts of track bolts inside of the track instead of outside. Thechief advantage in this is convenience and saving of time for thetrack inspector. In my last report I made some mention in regard to joint fasten-ings, and as a result of the inspections made during the season justclosed, I note that several of these lines have been experimentingwith patent joint fastenings of various kinds, with the result thatseveral roads have signified their intention of adopting one kind oranother instead of angle bars for all new work. This is an improve-ment in the right direction, but taking everything in considerationthere is, in my opinion, but one joint fastening that does all that isclaime
