A villager walks among tents set up by protesters in central Bangkok in a bid to shut down the Thai capital
Thousands of anti-government protesters have set up camp in the heart of Bangkok, shutting down traffic and the normal flow of the city in a bid to force the country's caretaker government to resign. Many of the protesters are from the country's south, which has long been the political stronghold of the opposition Democrat Party. They demand the cancellation of elections scheduled for February 2 and would like an unelected "people's council" to institute "reform." The protesters accuse the current democratically elected government, led by prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra, to be illegitimate.
