The great trees which shade theavenues, and grounds were planted by his own hand, and greatly beautifythe place. The quaint old farmhouse which still stands on Shirley Street is saidto have been the home of Deane Winthrop, the sixth son of Gov. Win-throp. It was built probably as early as 1649; anc^ nere the honorablegovernor and other colonial magnates, including also Chief-Justice Sewall,made many summer visits. Here Deane died, in the year 1704, having. The Old Deane Winthrop House, near Ocean Spray. lived hereabouts for forty years. Hewas the founder of the town of Groton,which he named for the home of his family in England. A little way beyond this ancient house, and over OceanSpray, is the noble headland of Grovers Cliff, where 180 acres of rollingpasture-land are owned by the corporation of Boston. In 1867 the citycouncil ordered the construction of a new and magnificent hospital for theinsane, on this estate ; but the mayor vetoed it, being opposed to such alarge outlay of money, and also objecting to the establishment of a publicinstitution on an exposed headland. The subsequent erection of the Stateasylum at Danvers rendered it unnecessary; and the land remains idle, inpossession of the city. Either here or on Great Head, the future citadelfor the defence of Boston Harbor will be constructed, to prevent vesselsfrom lying off in the Bay, and shelling the town.
