Building the transcontinental railroad (completed 1869) required many mammoth Marent Gulch (pictured here) is in the Cariacan Defile, on the Northern Pacific Railway, not far from the Flathead Reservation - near present-day Missoula in Montana. At the time, this bridge was one of the highest in the US. It is 226 feet high and 860 feet long.
