Fire Destroys Detroit Neighborhoods Due to High Winds and to Budget Cuts that Have Reduced the Number of Firefighters

Detroit, Michigan - Budget cuts that close eight or nine fire companies every day in Detroit hampered firefighters responding to 85 fires driven by gale-force winds that swept through the city September 7. Dozens of homes were destroyed, including 20 homes and 9 garages in this east side neighborhood.
