This was agreed to; and ahollow way being observed, by which troops could advance to withinfifty yards of the wall, four thousand five hundred men, the flowerof the combined army, undertook to penetrate it, while the restamused the garrison by feigned attacks. This party pushed on withgreat vigour; they had even crossed the ditch, mounted the parapet,and planted their standards on the wall. Being here exposed, however, to a tremendous fire from works well constructed and completely manned, they soon gave way; Count Pulaski was killed, anda brisk attack by Major Glaziers drove the whole back into the hol-low.
