The formation of the limbs begins as small buds, or outgrowths,arising from the me-soblastic .somites soon after the third week inthe human embryo, earlier in the rabbit and probably in most ofour domestic mammals. The limb-buds each represent severalmesoblastic somites, as indicated by the fact that the nerves pass-ing to each limb are formed by the union of branches from ,sev- 344 Veteritiary Obstetrics eral intervertebral nerves, each vertebra representing a buds lengthen to constitute the limbs, the bones arising fromthe connective tissue, while the muscles develop from the muscleplates of the mesoblast.
