BEECHER, Charles, clergyman, was born atLitchfield, Conn., Oct. 7, 1815, the fifth son of Ly-man and Roxana (Poote) Beecher. He was educatedat the Boston Latin school, and at the Lawrenceacademy in Groton, Mass.; entered Bowdoin college,from which he was graduated in 1834. At the timeof his graduation his fatherwas the president of Lane sem-inary, Cincinnati, and here hestudied theology, and was or-dained pastor of a Presbyte-rian churcli at Fort Wayne,Ind., in 1844. On account ofhis liberal views hi was dis-missed in 1851, and becamepastor of a Congregationalchurch in Newark, N. J. Heremained with this people fortliree years. The Congrega-tional church at Georgetown,Mass., was his next clianged his residence toFlorida in 1870, and remainedthere for seven years. Whilethere he served two years asstate superintendent of publicinstruction. He was a super-ior musician, and selected andarranged the Plymouth Collection.
