Night beach view north to illuminated Central Pier Big Wheel, Blackpool Tower and Silcock's Fun Palace, Blackpool Illuminations

Blackpool's Central Pier dates to 1864, the year after the more genteel North Pier. In 1990 the pier was strengthened, at a cost of £75,000, to take the weight of the 32 metres (108 feet) tall 'Big Wheel'. Blackpool Tower, opened in 1894, has computer-controlled changing lights, here blue and white. The Sky Flyer is a recent flying machine ride, where tourists sit in seats which rise and spin around the central column, here illuminated red. The ride was on the promenade, just north of the Central Pier's entrance. It was not present in 2015 and 2016.
