This is a real situation. Image not to be used in a defamatory context. Paediatric dialysis unit. Nurse hugging a two year old patient on a dialysis treatment unit. Kidney dialysis, or haemodialysis, is required when the kidneys are no longer able to filter waste products from the blood properly. During the procedure the patient's blood is passed through a dialysis machine, or dialyser, which acts as an artificial kidney, removing waste products and excess fluid from the blood. The procedure takes several hours and needs to be repeated several times a week. The bandage around the boy's head is to keep his neckline (used to connect to the dialysis machine) in place.
