Coloured precipitates of transition metal salts. Left to right: Precipitate of cobalt II salt in sodium hydroxide solution. Precipitate of Iron II salt in sodium hydroxide solution. Precipitate of iron III salt in sodium hydroxide solution. Precipitate of copper II salt in sodium hydroxide solution. The colour of the precipitates is used to identify if an unknown substance contains traces of a metal. This can be used in forensic science.
