Remains of the Glaoui family kasbah (castle, palace) at Telouet in the High Atlas Mountains, Morocco: begun in 1860 by Mohammed Ben Hammou (El Tibibt)

Remains of the Glaoui family kasbah (castle, palace) at Telouet in the High Atlas Mountains, Morocco. The fortified kasbah was begun in 1860 by Mohammed Ben Hammou, then added to as the family gained in wealth and power through their salt mine & control of the caravan route through the mountains from the Sahara to Marrakesh & beyond. Brothers Madani & T'hami El Glaoui supported the French Protectorate 1912-1956, but the Glaoui lands & properties were confiscated after Morocco gained independence & their kasbah began to crumble; it was further damaged in the serious earthquake of September 2023. Their dramatic story is told in the book Lords of the Atlas by Gavin Maxwell, first published in 1966.
