View form theatre stair through large glass windows to Millennium Bridge, Lowry Centre foyer, Salford Quays, Greater Manchester

The Manchester Docks, opened in 1894, closed in 1982 after the development of containerisation and the limited space on the Manchester Ship canal for increasing vessel size. In 1983 Salford Council acquired parts of the docks from the Manchester Ship Canal Company and redevelopment followed in 1985 under the Salford Quays Development Plan. The Lowry Centre named after local artist, Lowry, opened in 2000, at Pier 8 Salford Quays, at a cost of £106 million. The entrance foyer faces the public plaza. The Millennium Bridge, Salford Quays, also seen here, dates to 2000 and carries pedestrians across the Manchester Ship Canal from the Lowry Centre (foreground) to the Imperial War Museum North. The footbridge lifts up between the ornate towers at either end to let large vessels (pleasure craft and seasonal ferryboats to Liverpool) enter the upper reaches of Salford Quays. The bridge is 96 m long and is a bow- string arch. A view from foyer area theatre stairs inside the Lowry Centre to the public plaza and Millennium Bridge.
