The valve, a leaden disk affixedto the center of alarger disk of brass,is held up againstthe valve orifice bya system of twocurved levers, thelower of which issecured by fusiblesolder at its lowestpoint to a lightmetal frame. The valve seat is itself made elastic by the device offixing it in the center of a diaphragm of thin, hard metal, perforatedfor that purpose, and the pressure of the water upon the diaphragmkeeps it tight against the valve. The larger disk attached to the valvedisk serv^es as a deflector. When the solder is melted, the levers flyapart, and the valve and deflector drop about V^ inch, leaving ,spacefor the water to escape. It dashes against the disk, which is notchedand slightly dished at its edges, and is then deflected upward in spraytoward the ceiling. 322.
