Company sent out one hundred and five emigrants to Vir-ginia. Xo women or children went. Like the Californiapioneers of 49 their object was to find fortunes in the soil ofthe New \\orld. They took out pickaxes to dig for gold. Theemigrants had particular orders to search for mines of preciousmetals, and to seek for a passage to the Pacific. The colonists landed on the banks of a river which theynamed the James in honor of the King. For a like reasonthey named their settlement Jamestown (1607). Perhaps theablest man in the party was Captain John Smith. He becameone of the governors of the colonv. and wrote its history.
