Breathing. Coloured X-ray showing inhalation. The horizontal bands are the ribs, enclosing the lungs (dark purple). The heart is the orange mass at centre, while the diaphragm divides the lungs and the abdominal cavity (light purple, lower centre). During inhalation the ribs move up and to the side, and the diaphragm contracts, moving down, allowing the lungs to expand and fill with air. For an image showing exhalation see P590/236.
