The engineer of alarge western road that handles heavy passenger andfreight traffic wrote us about an instance of this kind: The American Ditcher was brought tothe place as quickly as possible, and inless than 6 hours the slide was it would have taken daysto handle it in any other manner. Trafficwas only slightly delayed. One road did so well with its first AmericanDitcher in building grade when labor was hard toget at any price, that it installed the second on theother end of the line, noses headed toward each other. An extra American Ditcher or two comes inhandy on any large system, the same as an additionallocomotive or other equipement. One Southern road has installed 9 AmericanRailroad Ditchers for both construction and main-tenance work in less than 12 months. One of the large Eastern systems, after trying2 Americans purchased 5 more Americans atone clip. 60 Building a Railroad The Smaller Roads. A Ditcher Work Train The requirements ofthe smaller road are justas insistent as those ofthe larger line, but oftenless in volume or degreefor the individual classof work. An individualPile Driver, SteamShovel or f^ocomotiveCrane might be necessary for the requirements of thelarger line, while the American would be perfectlyample for those of the smaller road. Then why have three times the investment whenthe American Railroad Ditcher will do all andmore than the three or more separate machines, orwhy do without having them all at the investment ofone? The American will build a railroad from stemto stern and then maintain it. It is very flexiblein its adaptation to the auxiliary uses. It can berun up onto a flat car, if it is on the ground, andshot out at train speed from one operation to another;and when it reach
