A daily line ofstages runs from the Gapto White Horse, four milesdistant. Population, , fifty-three andone-half miles.—Near thisstation are the American nickel mines—theonly mines of the kind worked in the UnitedStates. These mines are owned by a com-pany, who employ about one hundred men,and ship twelve hundred tons of matte annu-ally. This matte is the nickel ore reducedby smelting to a solid mass of metal, whichis then shipped to Swansea, Wales, wherethe nickel is extracted. The mine returned,according to the census of 1870, a productof sixty-six thousand dollars. There is agood hotel here, and lime-burning is carried I^V^f^^-kKr.
