These piles are driven ingroups i from three to six each under the building were finished off about four feel below the floor level atwhich point a reinforced concrete cap was huilt up to an eleva-. ft, below floor line, which elevation was adopted for thebase of steel columns. The wall foundations were carriedtween these concrete pile footings and were reinforced so aact as concrete beams; The concrete piles ordinarily carry aload of from 15 to >li. maximum , with all cranes. A test was made of one of these foundationsand the same was found to be satisfactory under the aboveloads. The longest pile driven in was 20 fl., others varied inlength down to 12 ft. The remainder of the foundations weredesigned with spread footings on basis of a soil pressure of5,000 lbs. per sq. ft. These footings are carried down to thenatural ground level and the wall footings are carried betweenthem as concrete beams as previously mentioned. In the firsteight bents of the machine and erecting shop, the engine pitsare also supported on concrete piles, eight concrete piles beingdriven under each engine pit, each figured to carry a maximumload of 35 tons. STRUCTURAL STEEL WORK. The structural steel work consists of plate, angle and channelcolumns supporting roof trusse
