The county of Lethbridge has a program which helps farmers to remove farmstead shelter- blets which are dying. This tree removal program was started two years ago in recognition of the fact that many farmstead plantings that were established in the 1920's and 1930's are now showing advanced signs of loss of vigor and in some cases the trees have died. The majority of the trees in these old shelterbests are poplars which are fast growing, but have only a limited lifespan. Advanced signs of loss of vigor include dead branches and tops, dead patches of bark, cankerous growths and a reduction of leaves on the branches.
