Never cut open the pages of a book or a magazinewith anything but a paper-cutter. A finger is too bhmt,and tears the edges. A knife is too sharp, and may cutthe edges unequally. The best paper-cutter is a thinslip of ivory. Wood and bone are nearly as good. Metalis not. Never deface books in any way. Never scribble onthem needlessly. Never disfigure them with unnecessarystamps, or with stamps in inappropriate places. A goodbook is a good friend, and should be treated with the re-spect due to a friend. Never wet your fingers to turn over a leaf. Be warnedby the fate of the king in the Arabian tale. Never turndown a corner of a page to hold your place. Never putin a soiled playing card, or a stained envelope, or a bit ofdirty string, or a piece of damp newspaper. Always usea regular book-mark.
