Heart implant surgery (image 3 of 12). Gloved hands attach an artificial blood vessel to a Novacor artificial heart (white) during an implant operation. The Novacor implant will be joined to the heart's left ventricle, taking over its role of pumping blood to the body through the body's main artery, the aorta. The artificial blood vessel will carry blood from the left ventricle to the artificial heart. The implant is placed in the abdomen and is powered by an external battery. Artificial hearts are used to keep patients with severe heart disease alive until a heart donor is found. This sequence of artificial heart implantation runs from image M561/033-044.
