The Water Survival event was a mystery event for the Region XII competition but it is now part of the usual lineup. Troops at 6 at Cuesta College, Sept. 11, 2012, next door to Camp San Luis Obispo, to find 70-degree water, a light mist, and a very large pool to tread water in. Once in the NCOs and Soldiers had to stay afloat in place for five minutes. Then they swam the width, rested, and began a mental game where a color scheme was shown and then they had to swim the width back and forth retrieving the proper color-coded canteen in sequence. After another rest, while draped in a wool blanket getting colder by the minute, they jumped back in and dragged a buoyant ruck sack and dummy weapon the length of the pool, dumped it on the bulkhead and swam back. Events were timed and graded. Some troops had to call for assistance from the lifeguards on duty. (Army National Guard photo/Master Sgt. Paul Wade)
