The natural history of British insects : explaining them in their several states, with the periods of their transformations, their food, economy, &ctogether with the history of such minute insects as require investigation by the microscope : the whole illustrated by coloured figures, designed and executed from living specimens . the middle of May it fpins a large brown cafe, within which itpafles to the Pupa ftate j the Moths appear in June. In the Caterpillar ftate it is fcarcely poflible to diftinguifli the Malefrom the Female, except that the former is fmaller than the latter; butin the laft ftate their colours are entirely different, the Female beingof a pale yellowifli teint, inclining to fox colour, the Male is of arich brown. The Eggs are very curious, they refemble in ihape thofe of a Hen,but are neatly mottled with dark browjn. The Caterpillars caft their fkins feveral times, and always therebyaffiime a new appearance, though the general colours and character ofthe fpecies may be traced through every ftage. Our figure is copiedfrom a very large and fine coloured fpecimen of the Female, thatwas met with at Darent-Wood^ Dartford. Explanation of the Figure ftiewii in Plate 103. The Eggs of the lutural fize. The Cafe which enclofes the Pupa \ the former is torn open toexpofe the latter within. PLATE 10^.
