John Gary, bom at Gharlestown, Mass., Novem-ber 6, 1778. He died May 8, 1828, aged forty-nine years. John Gary was a ship carpenter and mast and sparmaker, and while a young man worked with his the British burned Gharlestown in 1775, he re-moved his wife and children from their home on MaudHnStreet, near the river, to a building called the MaltHouse, not far from the place now occupied by the StatePrison. They afterwards removed to Reading, Mass., oc-cupying part of a house with a Mr. Bowman. Here hiseighth child, Nancy, was bom. While the family were atReading, John was employed by the United States Gov-emment to build boats at Cambridge. When theyretumed to Gharlestown they occupied for nearly oneyear a part of the fort which the British had evacuated. In the meantime John rebuilt his house on Maud-lin Street near the distillery, with timber brought fromLexington by a Mr. Han-ington. John
