The campaign may be said to have been opened by the battle of BrandyStation, June 9, 1868, a reconnaissance intended to ascertain whether the enemywas moving north. In this battle we formed a part of General Duffles divi-sion, which crossed at Beverly Ford, intending to efllect a junction with Gen-eral Greggs division which crossed at Kellys Ford. During this action wewere exposed to a severe artillery tire, and recrossed in the evening at Rappa-hannock Station. June 17, we were
