This photo shows the Hubble Space Telescope’s fully assembled Optical Telescope Assembly (OTA) at the then Perkin-Elmer plant in Danbury, Connecticut in October 1984. Hubble’s design consists of two hyperbolic mirrors, one concave and one convex, in an arrangement that packages a long focal length telescope into a shorter tube. Once checks were completed, the OTA would be flown by NASA’s “Super Guppy” transport plane to Lockheed’s Sunnyvale, California, plant for further assembly and verification testing.
