The memorial to Richard Byrd, American polar explorer and aviator, on Mount Victoria above Wellington in north island, New Zealand was unveiled on 11th march 1962. Design started by A. Leigh Hunt and completed by a committee led by Tracey Simpson. The monument is shaped as a polar tent which was reclad in the 1990's with ceramic tiles designed by Doreen Blumhardt, depicting auroras
