Bolzano / Bozen, South Tyrol, Trentino-Alto Adige, Italy: detail of a scene of Christian martyrdom in the Duomo di Santa Maria Assunta (Cathedral of the Assumption of Our Lady), featuring a bearded turbaned ruler, sitting on an ornate throne, pointing down at (out of view) a kneeling Christian about to be executed. This finely painted if fragmentary artwork is among the beautiful medieval frescoes in the cathedral that have survived decades of neglect and World War II bombs and still clearly demonstrate the local and regional evolution of 14th and 15th century figurative art. While some of the early 14th century wall paintings are in the Gothic linear tradition, later works show progression and innovation in their compositional balance and the more natural way in which the artists depicted people. Some show the strong influence of Giotto di Bondone (1267-1337), the Florentine painter known simply as Giotto, and were probably painted by his pupils or followers. Fourteenth century works here include a Pope Urban V fresco cycle of c. 1370 by the Giotto-influenced Master of San Urbano, while a fresco of c. 1385, attributed to the Master of Seis, depicts St Martin dividing his cloak with his sword to share it with a beggar. Fifteenth century artists represented include Konrad Erlin (Legend of the Seven Sleepers, 1424) and Friedrich Pacher (Legend of St Christopher, 1498). The cathedral, known to German-speaking Roman Catholics as Dompfarrkirche Maria Himmelfahrt, stands on the site of an early Christian basilica. It was enlarged in Romanesque style and re-dedicated in 1180 before gaining a Gothic appearance between 1380 and 1420. The ornate 65m-high open fretwork spire, added in 1517, features gargoyles judged masterpieces of High or Flamboyant Gothic sculpture and architecture.
