Beyond the Pir Panjal; life among the mountains and valleys of Kashmir . ded quite quarter of a milesince my first visit in 1887. The Trigonometrical Survey Mapwas completed in 1857. Reference to this, and to the re-lative position of the side streams, especially one whichdescends from a small lake 1000 feet above the valley, showsthat since that date, viz., in fifty years, the glacier must haveretreated about a mile. On 24th August 1909 I attempted the terminal ice-fall tothe left of the cave. It involved too much step-cutting, soretracing our steps, we found, about fifty yards to our left,a shallow crevasse which we followed up and soon arrived onthe first ice-field, a tract about half a mile square, coveredwith boulders, debris and gravel, with a few roches were very few crevasses, but at the upper end, to thesouth, was the second ice-fall, a mass of seracs with fantasticpeaks and spires, knife-like edges, towers and miniaturedomes. These were quite impassable, and they were hemmedin on either side by precipices. Crossing below this from. 2Q. KOLAHOI PEAK AND ITS NORTHERN GLACIER. To face p. 156. THE KASHMIR MATTERHORN 157 left to right and climbing over the extensive lateral moraine,I ascended a steep grassy slope, gradually rising abovethe seracs and the glacier-polished cliffs which form theirlateral boundaries. The flowers here were most beautifuland varied. Among the heaped-up rocks the blue poppygrows and thrives. In places the hillside was golden withragwort. As a contrast, ever and anon a little knoll is passed,azure-blue with forget-me-nots. In the hollows, the pinkand the deep red and white pedicularis with its curly-tailedflowers, or the pale yellow variety with calceolaria-likeblossoms, the sky-blue Jacobs ladder and the dwarf eveningprimrose are abundant. Mauve geraniums with flowers 2inches across, and the petals charmingly pencilled, areuniversal. Falconers corydalis with rich yellow blossoms, the elegant swertia with its spotted orc
