Neurone. Light micrograph of a single mammalian nerve cell or neurone. The technique used to prepare the specimen involves injecting horseradish peroxidase into the termini of the processes branching from the central cell body. The peroxidase is taken up by the projections and diffuses backwards towards the cell body. The peroxidase is coloured by a further staining technique to give a white appearance to the cell body and projections when viewed in a dark field. The technique is used to trace the pathways of nerve cell processes, and the location of their termini. The specimen is from a rat brain. Dark field illumination; magnification unknown.
