A Family Index. The fact that the factors thus far considered probably actedconjointly^ instead of independent^ in determining the amountsof schooling which the children received suggested that it mightbe possible to weight the various items in such a way as to giveeach family an index and then find the relationship which existsbetween this index and the schooling of the children. This wasdone as follows; The twenty-five percentile deviation from themedian was found for each of the three items, average educationof the parents, number of books in the home, and monthly figures, which were approximately 2 years, 62^ volumes and7£ dollars respectively, were then divided by five to give moreconvenient divisions.
