Thomas Young (1773-1829), English physicist and Egyptologist. By deciphering the Rosetta Stone, Young made possible the translation of Egyptian hieroglyphs. In physics he performed experiments which led him to the conclusion that light is made up of waves. Engraving after a portrait by Sir Thomas Lawrence.
