Moon calendar. Lunar calendar for calculating the appearance (phase) of the Moon on any given date. The calendar consists of a table and moving components. The table gives the dates of the new Moon over a 19 year cycle. A new Moon occurs when the Moon is located between the Sun and Earth and so is almost invisible. The phase of the Moon during the following nights is worked out using the pivoted, green wheel (at centre); the wheel's pointer is aligned with the number which relates to the number of days since the new Moon. Another pivoted wheel (at upper centre) allows the day of the week to be calculated from the date. Image of a French calendar from 1680 by Jean Oursel.
