Vasco da Gama's flagship of 1497. Historical artwork of the flagship of the 1497-9 expedition, led by the Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama (1460-1524), that sailed from Europe round Africa to India. This flagship was named the Sao Gabriel, and was commended by Vasco da Gama. It was one of two of the expedition's four ships to return to Portugal, though the expedition opened up a trading route that helped make Portugal a world power. This is a close-up of a page from the work 'Memorias das Armadas' (Memory of the Fleets), at the Sciences Academy of Lisbon. For the full fleet, see image C007/5235.
