Mr. Sweeting says, " For the discrepancy as to the number of vertebree, &c., I am of opinion that this species has not been described before, and I have proposed for it the name Balcenoptera tenuirostris " (Mag. Nat. Hist. 24th March, 1840,342). The skeleton here described was sold, about sixteen years ago (1859), for five pounds, to Mr. Freane, and it was stated to have been sent to London as a present to the British Museum, but it has never been received, and I cannot find any further account of it; probably it was sold for manure. B. tenuirostris is the earliest name given specially to this species, but it cannot be used for a whale with a broad nose or beak. This is most likely the same as the " Ostend "Whale," or a nearly allied species. The dorsal fin is described as small, conical, and three-fourths the length from the *•* Dorscdjm unknown.
