The Gortyn Code, or Great Code, carved on stones forming a wall, are the Civil law of the ancient City State of Gortyn in Southern Crete.
The Gortyn Code, or The Great Code, are a series of laws from the ancient Greek City-State of Gortyn in southern Crete. The laws date from around 450BC and deal mainly with family matters and inheritance, disputed matters concerning slaves, property and contracts. They do not deal with criminal matters. They are written in the Dorian language, a language used in many cities in Crete, including the most famous, coloums of text survive at Gortyn, bade up of blocks, each column being 10 metres long and metres high and each contains 600 lines of text, still perfectly readable today. They are sites near the Ampitheatre and are readily accessible to the visitor.
