Intervertebral disc implant. Coloured X-ray image of the cervical vertebrae seen in the neck of a patient with an artificial implanted inter- vertebral disc. The intervertebral disc (coloured pink) is seen between the C2 and the C3 vertebrae in the neck with the bottom of the skull visible at top right. Intervertebral discs are flat, circular, plate-like structures containing cartilage which line the joints between vertebrae of the spine. These discs act as shock absorbers to cushion the spine during movement. With increasing age, the discs wear out and become more susceptible to damage.
