Kidney anatomy. 19th century artworks of the kidney. At left are anterior views, at right posterior views. At centre an anterior view shows the network of blood vessels in the kidney. At top and bottom the renal artery is red, the renal vein is blue and the ureter, which carries urine to the bladder is white. At bottom the sections show the outer cortex (pink) and inner medulla (light pink). This anatomical artwork is plate 53 from volume 5 (1839) of 'Traite complet de l'anatomie de l'homme' (1831-1854). This 8-volume anatomy atlas was produced by the French physician and anatomist Jean-Baptiste Marc Bourgery (1797-1849). The illustrations were by Nicolas-Henri Jacob (1781-1871).
