Because of the steadfastness of his faith,and the firmness of his character, the Elector isknown in history as John the Constant. He wassucceeded by his son, John Frederick, whose zeal inthe Protestant cause was destined to pass through afiery experience. The new Elector was irritable intemper and dogmatic in manner, but was wiseenough to consult his theologians on all importantecclesiastical questions. When in June, 1533, thepapal nuncio came to Weimar, and proposed acouncil on the condition that the Estates wouldpledge themselves to submit to its decisions, he re-. Asthese theologians opposed a council on such a con-dition, one was not called, though at a conventionheld at Schmalkald, the Protestants had declaredthemselves favourable to a council: but it must bea council in which Christ shall be Pontifex, whoprays the Father for the Church, saying, Sanctifythen) by thy truth: thy word is truth. As misunderstandings and estrangements stillexisted and threatened the peace of the Churchand of the country, the Elector of Mayence andDuke George of Saxony offered themselves as med-iators. A conference was held in Leipzig, Melanch-thon and Bruck appearing in the name of the SaxonElector. The Catholic party would make no con-cessions on the main questions. They insistedon Good Works as necessary to Justification, andwanted Private Masses restored in the Protestantchur
