Xu You and Chao Fu, Edo period (1615–1868), 18th century, Japan, 'White–line' woodblock print; ink and color on paper, H. 11 7/16 in. ( cm); W. 5 1/2 in. (14 cm), Prints, Okumura Masanobu (Japanese, 1686–1764), Masanobu's treatment of the classical story of Xu You and Chao Fu is straightforward. Xu You washes out his ears in a waterfall, and Chao Fu turns his ox around from the water. The style imitates the 'rubbing' technique, a traditional method for renditions of classical inscriptions
