Porpoise and Fulton submarines. USS Porpoise (SS-7) and the submarine Fulton alongside. In the background are other submarines, with the nearer one the USS Plunger (SS-2). These Plunger-class submarines were built at Crescent Shipyard, Elizabeth, New Jersey, USA. Porpoise was laid down in December 1900, launched in September 1901, and commissioned in September 1903. The Fulton was built in 1901, but not for the US Navy. It was shipped to Russia in June 1904. These early submarines carried a crew of seven, and used a petrol engine on the surface and an electric one when submerged.
