Armbruster and Hofmann. Peter Ambruster (right) & Sigurd Hofmann, German discoverers of new chemical elements. Armbruster leads the group at the Heavy Ion Research (GSI) centre at Darmstadt in Germany which created the 6 heaviest- known elements (107 to 112) during 1981-96. Hofmann leads the Separator for Heavy Ion reaction Prod- ucts (SHIP) programme at GSI. The elements were made by colliding atomic nuclei together at high speeds using the UNILAC accelerator. The products of the reactions that take place are separated by the SHIP & passed into a detector for identifica- tion. These elements allow studies of the forces that bind nuclei together.
